“Does the Institution Have a Plan for That?" A discussion of our forthcoming chapter

“Does the Institution Have a Plan for That? Researcher Safety and the Ethics of Institutional Responsibility” - Roundtable Talk

Wednesday 27th January 2021 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM GMT (11:00 AM EST, 10:00 AM Central, 8:00 AM PST).

The Counter-Extremism and Gender Research Units at the Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right are thrilled to unite in hosting this timely and necessary event.

The ethics of online research and researcher safety online are emergent concerns articulated by researchers with increasing frequency. As such, approaches to these problematics tend to take researcher-focused frames. However, relatively little attention has been given to the ways in which institutions are responsible for ensuring the safety and ethical conduct of their researchers in online contexts. Taking this into consideration, this roundtable will discuss institutional ethical responsibility in relation to online research, with a specific focus on researcher safety including awareness, planning, and support, as fundamental aspects of conducting ethical research. Such ethical considerations about conduct and safety are particularly pertinent for researchers investigating sensitive topics including online hate crimes and violent extremism.

Registration is required for this virtual event. Please register here for a place on this limited numbers event! A link to the online webpage will be sent in the days prior to the event.

This discussion draws on a forthcoming chapter of the same name authored by CARR Doctoral Fellows Ashley A. Mattheis and Ashton Kingdon who will facilitate this discussion between scholars at the forefront of research and capacity building in this area.
